African Ball

The African Awards Banquet and Dinner is WISOMMM’s largest annual fundraising event which raises funds to benefit the African Ball ImageWISOMMM Child Care Center.  Since the first dinner which was held in October 2000, the event has raised more than $70,000. Each fall WISOMMM takes time out to celebrate and publicly recognize deserving sheroes and heroes in Essex County and New York metropolitan area. 

Over the years, this successful event has honored men and women for community, corporate, social and educational service, political activism, entrepreneurship and for being strong African families.

Back to school image Holistic ChildcareEach year WISOMMM sponsors an annual back-to-school youth festival; a fun filled event that showcases the talents and aspirations of kids in the greater Newark community. 

Talent shows, arts and crafts, essay contests and other positive youth activities bring kids and their families together to share food, music, and fun in Newark’s historic Lincoln Park. Winners of the annual essay contest are invited to attend WISOMMM’s annual African Ball.

The festival is aimed at deterring youth related violence, and encouraging students to persevere
and stay focused in school. All activities are free
to the public. Resources are donated by local
municipalities, corporations and small businesses.

 

Black History Image of Black FamilyAnnual Black History Month Celebration

Each year in February WISOMMM observes Black History Month showcasing films, scholars and cultural performances that highlight Africa’s gifts to the world.  The Black History Month Film Festival has been an opportunity to celebrate African American cinema and the African Diaspora and showcase a diverse collection of films - from emerging and established filmmakers.

 

 

Black Marriage Day Hall of Fame

This celebration is a heart-felt effort to recognize, and awaken in others, the importance and significance of marriage in the African-American community. We seek to honor, in perpetuity, Image of Black Couple for Black Marriage Day those couples who have led by example, holding together their marriages for decades, and whose enduring bond and love, inspires us all.

 

Kwanzaa Celebration

Each year in December WISOMMM celebrates African culture and traditions at its annual Kwanzaa Celebration.

 

Pre-Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise

Each year, WISOMMM honors mothers on a Pre-Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise fundraisor on The Spirit of New Jersey Cruise Line.  This is always the Perfect Gift for Special Moms

 

Quarterly Forum – American Prisons; A Hearing of Citizens

A series of on-going public forums and town hall meetings to discuss and strategize methods of reform for human rights violations within the Prison Industrial Complex.
